Pitch bending and shifting pedals have been around for decades. From the simplest early octave fuzz pedals to the '70s Electro Harmonix Micro Synth and Mutron Octave Dividers all the way up to the Digitech Whammy, effects builders have given players a lot of ways to tweak pitch over the years.
Pitch shifting is not without limitations, however. Many pitch shifters are monophonic pedals and can only handle two notes simultaneously if they're played in perfect intervals like octaves, fourths or fifths. Once a third or seventh gets thrown into the mix—or for that matter a simple barre chord—things get garbled up fast. Morpheus' Bomber...
ANALOG VERSUS DIGITAL? THAT'S SO 1999. IT'S BEEN SAID THE ONLY RULE IN RECORDING IS THAT THERE ARE NO RULES, SO CAST OFF THOSE PREJUDICES AND PICK THE RIGHT TOOL FOR THE RIGHT JOB
MORPHEUS BOMBER PEDAL A Virtual Vibrato Tailpiece? Yes, But It's More Than That Pitch-shifting guitar signals isn't new; just ask anyone who bought a DigiTech Whammy pedal ten years ago. But time marches on, technology improves, and DSP gets faster and more accurate—which brings us to the Bomber, a truly polyphonic (yes, you can play chords), pedal-controlled pitch shifter.
One word - awesome! Definitely one of the coolest pedals I have played in years. Like having a floating trem system installed on any guitar. Very cool to be able to go full whammy bar playing a hard tail Les Paul. You can set up the pedal so that depressing it either lowers the pitch (bombs) or raises the pitch (climbs) in defined increments - 2nds, 4ths, 5ths, octave and double octave. If you work with the pedal in 2nd increments, it's very easy to mimic the sound of slide guitar on a standard tuned guitar. Very cool stuff here!
The sound of the Bomber is great. The bending effects sound authentic even to the highest settings. Even when moving the pedal up and down slowly, the bending sound was smooth and even. Leaving the pedal in the full on position will present some small artifacting on the 2 octaves settings. The sound does come out a bit more digital when in full on position and set to an extreme setting. Considering the pedal is to be used for bending notes, not transposing a guitar two octaves, the sound differences is negligible.
There is no noticeable latency when in full on mode either, the pedal tracking even the fastest playing without any delays or latency. The pedal also has rubber on it to prevent a foot from sliding off while in use. There is no rubber on the bottom but it is a smooth surface so assembly in a pedal board is easy.
The bomber is a great pedal for those who want to bend notes or whole chords without putting your guitar out of tune. The pedal works as advertised allowing the bending of notes for any guitar plugged. The setup is easy and the sound is right where it needs to be.
